Workplace Safety - How To Reduce Accidents

Workplace safety depends on doing five things:

1. Eliminate hazards. The best option is to eliminate anything in the workplace that might cause an accident or injury. But there is a limit to what can be done. Short of putting everyone in a padded room, there will still be hazards in the workplace.

2. When a hazard cannot be eliminated, put physical barriers around the hazard. The barriers should prevent access to the hazard. However, more than that is needed. The physical barriers need to be labeled to warn people about the hazard. If the purpose for the barrier is not understood, people may become creative in finding a way around the barrier - in particular if they feel it will make their job easier. In addition, labels and signs should be used to inform workers about procedures (such as LOTO) for removing the barrier when that becomes necessary.

3. If a hazard cannot be isolated by a barrier, use administrative controls. These establish rules and procedures that prevent workers from being exposed to the hazard. Be sure to use labels and signs to inform workers about the rules. Having safety information at the point of need, is critical to having a safe workplace.

4. If the hazard cannot be eliminated, reduced, isolated by a barrier, or addressed through administrative controls, then provide workers with additional protection, known as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). While not as good as preventing access to the hazard, PPE provides some protection should work need to be done that might expose the worker to a hazard. Be sure to use labels and signs to warn workers about the hazard and inform them about the need to use PPE.

Using A 4 Inch Label Printer To Make OSHA Safety Signs

Safety signs typically need to be at least 8" x 10" and larger sizes are not uncommon. Sign printers such as the DuraLabel 9000 can print an 8x10 safety signs directly. But, you can also print these larger size safety signs using your four inch DuraLabel printer.

By using a process called "tiling" multiple lengths of vinyl (or other label material) can be combined to make a larger safety sign. Basic instruction for label tiling are available here.

DuraLabel four inch printers will automatically tile a sign, if a sign that is larger than 4" in height is sent to the printer. However, another option is also available. You can print individual lengths - essential individual labels - that can be combined to create a sign. For example, you may print a 4" x 12" yellow label with the word CAUTION on it. Then print a 4" x 12" white label with the word HIGH centered on it. Finally a third 4" x 12" white label with the word VOLTAGE on it. When combined they produce a caution sign that has a yellow header. The sign says, CAUTION HIGH VOLTAGE.

What about the materials the label is made from? OSHA only states that the label (or sign) itself must be safe. Commercial Building Pipe Marking

Pipe marking in commercial buildings, apartment buildings, schools and retail buildings has some additional considerations beyond what the code requires. For example, there are many types of water pipes: chilled water, condensate, low-temperature hot water, domestic hot water, drains and more. The ANSI code specifies white lettering on a green background for all types of water. There is no provision for identifying specific types of water.

Yesterday I wrote about the importance of having exits and exit routes properly marked. Missing or improper exit signs are a commonly cited safety problem during OSHA inspections.

The NFPA 101 Life Safety Code specifies marking of stairwells such that stairs, doors and directions are visible during an emergency. In addition, many city building codes now require this type of stairwell marking.

Phosphorescent signs are becoming the standard for marketing exit ways and stairs because of its simplicity, versatility and reliability. The diagram to the left shows how a typical stairwell is marked.

Notice that the edges of stairs are marked as well as doors being outlined. This makes them easier to see during an emergency. Also notice the direction arrows located low down and close to the stairs. Directions to exits need to be located close to the floor, as well as at a normal height, because people may be trying to stay low if there is smoke in the stairwell.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited New Brunswick Scientific Co. for 29 safety and health violations at its Edison facility. Proposed penalties total $122,000 following an inspection initiated as part of OSHA's Site-Specific Targeting Program for industries with high injury and illness rates.

Twenty-eight serious violations involve locked exit doors, obstructed exit routes and unmarked exit routes, an inadequate hazardous energy control program, blocked access to a fire extinguisher, inadequate machine guarding, various electrical and noise hazards, a lack of training on noise hazards, chemical exposure above the recommended limit, use of methylene chloride without determining employees' exposure, asbestos surface contamination, a lack of asbestos training, ineffective engineering controls, not providing proper personal protective equipment and the lack of a hazard communication program.

OSHA citations regularly include unmarked exits or unmarked exit routes as a part of the citation. It is a common problem OSHA finds in workplaces and one that is easily prevented. NFPA 70E states: "Switchboards, panelboards, industrial control panels, meter socket enclosures, and motor control centers in other than dwelling occupancies, which are likely to require examination, adjustment, servicing, or maintenance while energized, shall be field marked to warn qualified persons of potential electric arc flash hazards."
